The Kimmel Performing Arts Center was opened in December 2001. It is the crown jewel in the Avenue of the Arts in Philadelphia. Perks Reutter Associates worked with the Board to bring the spectacular project from concept to reality. Featuring a dramatic, vaulted, curved-glass ceiling that soars 150 feet high, the complex includes a 2,500-seat Concert Hall, a 650-seat Recital Hall, the Merck Arts Education Center, and a restaurant and gift shop. The Kimmel Center serves as the performance home for the Philadelphia Orchestra, as well as the American Theater Arts for Youth, the Opera Company of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Ballet, Philadanco, Peter Nero and the Philly Pops, the Chamber Orchestra, and the Philadelphia Chamber Music Society. The center also features "Commonwealth Plaza," a cultural commons for the city, and a tree-lined, indoor, rooftop garden on top of the Recital Hall. |
