2nd
TMDL Meeting Held
DEP conducted a second TMDL meeting on Wednesday, January 22, 2003. About 25 members of the public attended, to contribute their knowledge of and familiarity with the water bodies targeted for development of TMDLs for fecal coliform in WMA17, particularly regarding the potential causes of elevated fecal coliform levels. Participants reviewed location maps of the waterway segments and associated water quality data provided by DEP, discussed the potential sources for the elevated levels and the need for TMDLs for the waterways, and provided written comments for consideration by DEP. The information provided by participants at the meeting, as well as any additional information submitted to DEP by mail, e-mail or telephone, will be used to direct field investigations of the identified areas of concern. Information regarding the targeted waterbodies may be directed to Ms. Christina Steward, the Americorps New Jersey Watershed Ambassador for WMA17 via regular mail at: Culmberland County Department of Planning and Development, 800 East Commerce Street, Bridgeton, NJ 08302; via e-mail at christinast@co.cumberland.nj.us, or by telephone at (856) 453-2169. Questions, comments or concerns regarding TMDLs and the TMDL development effort may be directed to Mr. David McPartland,, DEP’s new Watershed Management Area 17 Manager, by telephone at (609) 292-08372 or via e-mail at david.mcpartland@dep.state.nj.us. |

| Total Maximum Daily Load’s (TMDL’s) for Fecal Coliform to be Developed for WMA 17 An introductory meeting to discuss development of Total Maximum Daily Loads (TMDLs) for fecal coliform in Watershed Management Area 17 was held at the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Service and 4H offices in Deerfield Township on Tuesday, December 10, 2002. The meeting, conducted by DEP’s Division of Watershed Management, was convened to explain to Watershed Management Study PAC and Task Force members the recently signed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop TMDL’s for 120 waterways and 35 lakes in New Jersey by July 31, 2003. Of these, 8 waterways and 5 lakes are located in WMA 17. Fecal Coliform TMDLs for the WMA 17 waterways and lakes are being expedited under the MOA, and are scheduled to be completed by June, 2003. It is anticipated that the established TMDLs for each of the water bodies will be incorporated into DEP’s regulatory programs, with potential discharge limit ramifications for future permit applicants. The targeted WMA 17 waterways and lakes include the following: |
| - Waterways | |
- Little Ease Run at Porchtown |
| - Indian Branch near Malaga |
| - Maurice River at Norma |
| - Maurice River near Millville |
| - Buckshutem Creek near Laurel Lake |
| - Cohansey River at Seeley |
| - Salem River at Woodstown |
- Two Penny Run near Danceys Corner |
| - Lakes |
- Burnt Mill Lake |
- Giampietro Lake |
- Mary Elmer Lake |
- Memorial Lake |
| - Sunset Lake |
| These target water bodies were selected based on review of existing data indicating that levels of fecal coliform were impairing the designated uses of the water bodies. A second TMDL meeting will be scheduled for the 1st week of January, 2003 to which interested members of the public will be asked to bring their knowledge of and familiarity with the target water bodies, particularly regarding the potential causes of the elevated fecal coliform levels. If the elevated levels of fecal coliform for any of the above listed water bodies can be reliably attributed to a particular source or anomalous condition, the requirement to establish a TMDL for that water body may be removed. Public participation in this process is extremely important since input from local stakeholders will help determine the identification of potential sources of fecal coliform in each waterbody. Notice of the date and time of the second TMDL meeting will be posted on this website. Questions, comments or concerns regarding TMDLs and the TMDL development effort are directed to Mr. Jay Springer, DEP’s Watershed Management Area 17 Manager, by telephone at (609) 341-3122 or via Email at Jay.Springer@dep.state.nj.us. |
